Please read this firstThis is a plain-English summary to help you understand how Trader.co.uk works. It is a guide only. The full Combined Buyer & Seller Terms are the legal agreement between you and us, and they are what apply if there is ever any question. Important: this summary does not replace them or change them. Where something matters to you, please read the full terms.

1.What Trader.co.uk is

Trader.co.uk is a marketplace for buying and selling vehicles. We connect buyers and sellers — we do not own, buy, or sell the cars ourselves.

When a car sells, the contract is between the buyer and the seller. We act as the seller's agent to help the sale happen (listing it, running the auction or sale, taking payment, and helping with collection), and we charge a fee for running the platform. We are not a party to the sale itself.

2.If you're selling

Your car, your responsibility You must own the car (or be allowed to sell it), and everything you tell us about it must be true and accurate — the mileage, the description, the photos, the history. If your listing is wrong or misleading, that's on you, and a fee may apply.

Private seller or trade seller? If you're an ordinary person selling your own car, you're a "private seller" and you keep all your normal consumer rights. If you sell cars as a business, you're a "trade seller" and full business terms apply to you. You must register as the right one — see the honesty note near the end.

How you get paid The buyer pays into a secure account held by our payment provider. You'll see the money straight away, but you can't draw it down until the buyer has collected the car and confirmed they're happy. Then you draw it down and it reaches your bank, usually within a day. Don't hand over the keys until the platform tells you the funds are ready.

Selling "as seen" In a trade-to-trade sale, cars are usually sold "as seen" — the buyer inspects and takes the car as it is. This does not cover lying about the car or hiding faults.

3.If you're buying

You're buying from the seller, not from us Your contract is with the seller. We help the sale happen but we're not the seller and not responsible for the car itself.

Pay on time You must pay within 24 hours of getting your invoice. If you don't, a late fee applies, and if you still haven't paid after 7 days the sale can be cancelled and a relist fee charged to the card you used to bid.

Check before you accept — then it's yours Always inspect the car (or send someone you trust) before you accept it. You accept by confirming in the app, or by giving the seller your release code. Once you've accepted and taken the car, the sale is final — you can't undo it through the platform. So check first.

Make sure it's road-legal before you drive it Tax, MOT, insurance and roadworthiness are your responsibility before the car goes on the road. We don't check these.

4.Fees and money

Buyers pay a flat platform fee, shown on the listing before you commit. The only other charges are ones you'd only pay if something isn't followed — like paying late, not collecting on time, or storage. All the figures are set out in our Fees & Payments Schedule.

If you're a buyer and you cancel after paying, you don't get the fees back, but the money for the car is refunded to you (you may need to verify your identity first).

5.Chargebacks (reversing a card payment)

Please don't try to reverse a completed purchase through your bank — if there's a problem with the car, that's a matter between you and the seller.

If you're a trade buyer and you buy from a private seller, you carry the risk of any chargeback once the seller has done everything right; you can't claw the money back from a private individual who has performed.

If you're a trade seller, you're responsible for chargebacks on cars you've sold, and we can recover what's owed. Private sellers who have done everything right are not on the hook for chargebacks.

6.If something goes wrong

Any dispute about a car is between the buyer and the seller — you should sort it out directly. We're the marketplace, not a judge of disputes, and we're not liable for the car or for what the other party does. Our liability to you is limited, as set out in the full terms.

7.The serious bits — please don't

  • Don't pretend to be a private individual if you're actually trading. If you do, you lose any consumer protection, you'll be treated as a trade user, and you may be suspended. We can re-categorise you.
  • Don't go around the platform to dodge fees after we've introduced you to someone — there are charges for that.
  • Don't misdescribe a car, sell one you don't own, or hide finance or write-off history.
  • We can suspend, restrict, or remove accounts that break the rules.
